4 Bad Habits That Hurt Your Teeth

No matter how excellent your at-home dental hygiene or how regularly you see your dentist, there are still little habits that can harm your teeth. Are you guilty of any of these?

  1. kid clenching teethGrinding or clenching your teeth isn’t just bad for your teeth, it can also cause jaw pain and joint dysfunction. Often this happens at night without us realizing it. In that case, speak with your dentist about solutions. They may have a trick or tool to help you out. If you catch yourself doing this during the day, just relax!
  2. Biting your fingernails can damage your tooth enamel, and it’s especially bad for fillings. Not only that, but your fingernails carry bacteria, germs, and dirt, so biting them isn’t just bad for your teeth, it’s bad for your health. Bitter-tasting nail coat, available at most drugstores, can help break this habit.
  3. Chewing ice cubes and very hard candies like jawbreakers should be a no-brainer when it comes to teeth health, but just in case, here’s the official word: don’t do it! These can play havoc with your enamel, and even break your teeth! If you absolutely crave something cold to chew on, stick with soft treats like low-sugar popsicles.
  4. It may be tempting to use your teeth to open packages, tear tape, hold or open things, but DON’T! Use the correct tool for the job and save your teeth for eating.
