CBCT Scan

CBCT is the abbreviation for cone-beam computed tomography.  A CBCT scan is a special type of x-ray used if regular dental or facial x-rays are not sufficient for a definite diagnosis.  This scan produces 3D images of the teeth, bone, soft tissues, and nerves in a single scan.  To obtain more detailed imaging, the scan requires more radiation than normal dental x-rays, so it is only used if necessary.  Fortunately, though, it does require less radiation than a full CT scan.

Due to the strength of this scan, no metal objects can be close by.  Glasses, hearing aids, hairpins, jewelry, and metal underwires will need to be removed before the scan can begin.  Some dental appliances will also need to be removed.

A cone-shaped x-ray beam is used to take a large number of images.  The machine is designed to be smaller than a regular CT scanner but has the ability to obtain similar imaging.  The scan cannot image lymph nodes, muscles, glands, or nerves, but they can be used to look at dentition, the jaw, other bony structures of the face, and the nasal cavity and sinuses.

A CBCT digital scan is not used for regular dental examinations but only for more complex orthodontic issues.  Jordan Dentistry offers this special service for patients in need.
