7 Easy Tips to Protect Your Teeth this Halloween

Halloween chocolates in the shape of ghosts, bats, witches, and jack-o-lanternsJust because it’s Halloween doesn’t mean you should neglect your dental health. There are lots of things you can do to keep your teeth healthy and still enjoy Halloween. Chew on these Halloween dental tips!

  1. Choose Chocolate – While all candy is bad for your teeth, chocolate is probably the least harmful because it washes off your teeth easier than most other candies.
  2. Timing is Everything – It’s better to eat candy around meal time. Your mouth produces more saliva while eating, and this extra saliva can help rinse away bits of stuck food and neutralize acids caused by candy.
  3. Chew Gum – Chewing sugarless gum (which will have the ADA Seal) can help deter tooth decay when chewed after meals. Chewing sugarless gum increases saliva production (just like when eating meals).
  4. Drink Your Water – Drinking water is always good for your health, but fluoridated water is also good for helping to prevent tooth decay.
  5. Pass on Hard or Sticky Candy – Hard candy can chip your teeth if chewed, but it’s also bad to suck on them for a long time as the melting sugar turns your saliva into a sugary wash that coats your entire mouth. Likewise, sticky candy is very hard to get off your teeth.
  6. Brush and Floss Teeth – Remember to brush your teeth twice a day and floss!
  7. Visit your Dentist! – Like always, it’s important to schedule regular dental exams (even if you follow these Halloween dental tips).
