Do You Need a Dental Crown?

In the dental world, crowns are used to restore and enhance teeth that have been damaged. A crown, also called a cap, is used to cover a damaged tooth completely. A crown strengthens a tooth and can dramatically improve a tooth’s appearance, shape and alignment in the mouth. Someone who has a tooth that isn’t the same shape or size as their other teeth or needs support could benefit from getting a dental crown.

A dental crown might be needed in one of the following situations:

  • To protect a weak tooth from breaking or to hold together part of a cracked tooth
  • To restore an already broken tooth
  • To cover and support a tooth with a large filling
  • To hold a dental bridge in place
  • To make a cosmetic modification

Crowns can be made from a variety of materials that can blend with the shade and shape of your natural teeth, including stainless steel, gold or another alloy, porcelain fused to metal, all resin, or all ceramic.

Dental Crown Treatment

Most dental crown treatments consist of two visits to your dentist. During the first visit, your Cumming, GA dentist will probably take a few x-rays to help examine your current teeth and surrounding bone. Before the process of making a crown begins, your dentist will numb the tooth and the surrounding gum tissue. Next, the tooth receiving the crown will be filed down along the chewing surfaces to allow room for the crown. After reshaping your tooth, your dentist will use putty to make an impression of the tooth that will receive the crown. Then, you will go home with a temporary crown to cover and protect the tooth.

During your second visit, your dentist will remove the temporary crown and check the fit and color of your permanent crown. Then, you will receive a local anesthetic to numb the area and the new crown is permanently cemented into place.
