Extra Sugar Need Not Apply

Summer is a great time to treat yourself and your family to delicious, icy snacks, but we know that added sugar isn’t good for your dental health. How can you enjoy cool treats when you’re worried about extra sugar? The staff at Jordan Dentistry in Cumming, GA love cool snacks just as much as anyone. Here are our favorite no sugar added summer treats to help you stay cool and hydrated!

fresh berries for summer

Fro-Yo Bites – yogurt is full of calcium, protein, and taste, and berries are full of fiber and flavor without the extra sugar, so we love this recipe! Blend plain yogurt with your favorite berries, pour the mixture into an ice tray, and freeze just long enough for it to be about the texture of ice cream. You can even sneak veggies like spinach into these; picky eaters won’t be able to tell.

Fruity Ice Pops – this simple concoction is just thin-sliced fruit and water in popsicle molds. The recipe calls for kiwi and strawberries, but don’t feel limited–experiment with your favorite fruits to see what you like best. Remember: never chew on hard ice! Hard ice can damage the enamel of your teeth, and even cause chipping.

Naturally Flavored Water – drinking water (not juice or soda) is so important to health, but it can get boring after a while. Experiment with different sugar-free ways to make your water taste more exciting. Infusing water with fruits, herbs and spices, even veggies like cucumbers means kids and adults alike will get excited about hydration!

And don’t forget that the simplest treats are sometimes the best. Keep fruits and veggies bagged in the freezer and pull them out to for quick, healthy snacks this summer. If you have another favorite no-sugar summer treat, let us know!
