Floss Often, And Floss Well

Everyone dreads these words when they visit the dentist: “How often do you floss?”, which is then usually followed by “You should floss more regularly.” It’s like a broken record, but these questions and suggestions that your dentist makes are not without reason. Jordan Dentistry strongly encourages flossing to become a regular part of your dental hygiene, as it is essential. 

With flossing being so important, there is a more efficient way to do it as well. The American Dental Association has a list of tips that it has found to be the most effective way to clean between your teeth! 

  1. FlossingBreak off 18 inches of floss. You don’t need to bring out the ruler and measure exactly, but it is necessary to have enough floss to work with for the following steps to be efficient.
  2. Hold the floss firmly between your thumb and forefinger. Good control of  thefloss will help you to work it between your teeth, and will also help to avoid slipping and hitting your gums too hard.
  3. Do not snap the floss to your gums. The ADA recommends that a gentle rubbing motion be used to work the floss between teeth.
  4. When you have worked the floss to your gum, form the floss into a C shape against a tooth. Then gently slide it into the space between the gum and the tooth.
  5. Hold the floss tightly against the tooth. Gently rub the side of the tooth, moving the floss away from the gum with up and down motions. And don’t forget about the back of your last tooth!
