How Often Should You Visit the Dentist?

Did you know that even 50 years ago, there were no set guidelines for how often you should visit your dentist? Many dentists focused simply on fixing existing problems rather than on preventive care. Dental and health organizations decided there was a need to set standards for preventative dentistry, and made a “guesstimate” of twice a year, or every six months.

Thankfully, that useful rule of thumb is still common today. Even if you take excellent care of your teeth and gums at home, it’s still a good idea to visit your dentist regularly, so that he or she can check for problems that you may not see or feel. Regular dental visits allow your dentist to check for early signs of disease, and problems can be treated at a more manageable stage. Furthermore, many dental issues don’t become visible or cause pain until a more advanced stage, such as cavities, oral cancer and gum disease.Healthy smile

Exceptions to The Rule

For most people, seeing their Cumming, GA dentist twice a year works well for their oral health regimen. However, some people may need more frequent visits, such as people with a high risk of dental disease. Depending on your dentist’s suggestion, you might  need to visit every three or four months, or more. This high-risk group includes smokers, diabetes, people with current gum disease, people with a weak response to bacterial infection, and people who tend to get cavities more frequently.

Of course, the “every six months” rule may change for any person during a lifetime for various reasons. In times of stress or illness, you may need to see your dentist more than usual. (For example, pregnant women are encouraged to visit the dentist due to hormonal changes that can make some dental problems worse.) In fact, your dentist might be able to help you fight off infection or treat changes in your mouth.

By following a daily oral care regimen at home and making regularly scheduled visits to your dentist, you can stay ahead of any dental health issues before they arise or before they become any worse. Don’t hesitate to make an appointment with Jordan Dentistry in Cumming, GA to schedule your next dental check-up.
