Oral Health Resolutions for the New Year

It’s that time of year again when many people strive to make changes to better themselves for the coming year. Setting goals for oral health is no different than setting goals for overall health. Here at Jordan Dentistry, our goal is to help our patients achieve their health goals, whether they’re dentist-related or not! Here are some suggested oral health resolutions to help kick off the new year.

  • Eat more veggies and fruit and avoid sugar when you can. Excess sugar can lead to decay, which can wear on your tooth’s enamel.
  • Brush and floss every day. Brush twice a day for at least two minutes (set a timer if you have to) and floss once, making sure to get between each tooth.
  • Schedule your biannual checkups with your Cumming, GA dentist. Everyone should see a dentist at least once every six months, although some people may require treatment or cleanings more often.
  • Drink more water and less soda. If you are going to drink soda and other sugary drinks, try using a straw and limit the amount of time spent actually drinking them.
  • Stop smoking. Aside from increased build up of plaque, bad breath, and tooth discoloration, gum disease and oral cancer also result from smoking. Make 2013 your year to kick the habit!
  • Schedule an oral cancer screening at your next dental visit, especially if it has been a year or longer since your last screening.

What other resolutions can you think of that will benefit your oral health? Feel free to leave us a comment below! By taking small steps, 2013 can be your year to overcome any bad oral health habits and have a smile that you can be proud to show off! Don’t hesitate to call our office to schedule your next dental check-up, oral cancer screening, or to discuss general dentist services that can improve your smile.
