Everyone has an overbite. An overbite is there your upper teeth overlap your bottom teeth when you bite down. The ideal amount of overbite is about 1mm. You can be classified as having an abnormal overbite when your upper and lower teeth overlap more than 5mm.

How Does an Overbite Affect my Oral Health?

Severe overbites can actually cause physical change to the jaw line making what would normally be an elongated face with distinct jaw line into a rounder face and small chin. Overbites can affect chewing, making eating difficult. Sometimes they lead to headaches and TMJ.

How Did I Get an Overbite?

Overbites are typically genetic, inherited from your parents. They can also be caused by bad habits as a child such as thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, or excessive pacifier use.

Treating an Overbite

Treating overbites can be done at any age, but it is easier to correct them in children because their jaws are easier to manipulate than adults. X-rays will be taken to determine the severity of an overbite, and if necessary, Dr. Jordan will recommend an orthodontist for treatment.
