Unlike regular health insurance, most people do not know that dental insurance is structured completely differently. Health is insurance is typically structured to pay for specific types of treatments and medications. If you are looking for this same structure in dental insurance, it would be very hard to find. Dental insurance is structured so that it will help you pay for your treatments and visits, not pay for them 100%.

Things You Should Look For in Dental Insurance

The best pieces of advice that we can give you for dental insurance is that you should look for plans that allow you to pick your own dentist. Some plans only allow you to choose a dentist from their specific, pre-approved list. This could mean that you are forced into visiting a dentist that you don’t know, like, or trust, and their office could be completely inconvenient to you and your family. Instead, look for insurance plans that allow you to choose your own dentist. This way, you can choose from the wide range of dentists available and select one with a good reputation, that is convenient to your location, that you can trust. Also, some insurance plans have a set list of how much they will pay towards each type of service, no matter how much the service actually costs. Instead, look for plans that cover “reasonable and customary” percentages of the price of your treatments. This means the insurance company will calculate how much they will pay for a teeth cleaning (for example) based on the prices of teeth cleanings at your dentists office compared to others in the area.

This is just the tip of the ice berg when it comes to insurance, but Jordan Dentistry suggests you keep these tips in mind when you are choosing dental insurance for your family.
