What is a Dental Bridge?Missing Tooth Img

Dental bridges are permanent, cosmetic solutions to fill in the gap left by a missing tooth with a false tooth. Bridges are anchored with crowns to the healthy teeth on either side of the gap, and the void in the middle is filled with a false tooth connected to the crowns. Bridges are typically constructed of porcelain or ceramic and may be fused to metal. There are two other types of bridges available: a cantilever bridge or a Maryland bonded bridge. A cantilever bridge is held in the mouth by one or more crowns on either side of the gap left by the missing teeth. On the other hand, Maryland bonded bridges are held in the mouth with ‘wing’ like structures that are bonded to the back of the healthy teeth. The wings are connected by a metal frame work which the false teeth are then adhered to.

Am I a Candidate for a Dental Bridge?

If you have one or more missing teeth, and are comfortable with the idea of a permanent implant, then you are a candidate for a dental bridge. People with otherwise healthy teeth are the best candidates for porcelain or ceramic bridges. If you have a missing front tooth without abutment teeth, you would be a candidate for a cantilever bridge.
